Free the Nipple? Topless Equality? WTH?

Free the NippleAs an African American woman, I have always understood the need for equality between women and men but some battles have me confused. Yesterday, there was a topless rally held in my hometown of Memphis, TN and the cause was to help bring light to the issue of topless equality or nipple discrimination as I like to call it. The event was in celebration of International “Go Topless Day,” which held events in about 60 other locations.

Someone help me understand why it’s important for women to be able to walk around with the girls out? What will winning this equality battle prove? Equal pay and rate of advancement, I get? The ability to preach and lead churches, I get? The ability not to be treated as property and second class citizens, I’m all for it? The right to go to school…YES YES YES! The ability to walk around topless without getting arrested and have people gawk at you, I fail to understand the importance of that one.  I’m sure men won’t mind, but it’s just not appropriate in most settings. Whether we like it or not breasts are considered sexual. Men don’t have boobs and I don’t believe asking women to cover them is an unreasonable societal request. As long as we have two genders, we will always have a double standard in certain aspects. Some women don’t want to cover their boobs or do domestic duties but I wonder if those same women would be ok with men deciding they no longer want to pay for dates, open doors, pull out chairs, do yard work or take out the trash. Oh yeah, some have and we call them cheap, jerks and say they weren’t raised right. I don’t think women really want it equal across the board. There truly are some perks to having lady parts.Time is precious and I believe you have to pick your battles. Misogynistic or not, to me this battle is just a waste of time and a little dumb.

What do you think? Do you believe women should be allowed to walk around topless like men?

I posed this question earlier and here are some of the responses I got.

How can their be equality between men and women if God made woman for man?–N. Grafton

As much as I’d love interject my thoughts on this…I will merely mention a few words to consider; decorum, propriety, vanity. At some point “ladies and gentlemen”, as a generally proper descriptive statement could become…passe! #Ihopenot–E. Donelson

Some people must have really easy lives b/c I don’t have time to fight over stuff like being topless. I have bills to pay, loved ones to protect, heaven to get into, etc. Just sayin’...–A. Wilson

Read the CA article about yesterday’s event here.  One participant was 60 years old and on a scooter. Very interesting…….
